In view of World Consumer Rights Day on Wednesday 15 March, TIC Council is hosting a hybrid event to launch its new Market Study titled “Consumer Goods in the EU: Persisting Safety Issues.”, to exchange best practices from other regions and draw learnings in order to enhance the circulation of safe products around the world.

TIC Council conducted a market study in 2022 to assess the compliance of consumer electrical products sold in the European Single Market with basic safety requirements from European product safety legislation. The study sourced 120 samples from seven different EU countries which were then sent to an accredited laboratory for evaluation against the regulations.  Alarmingly, the results showed that 85 out of the 120 tested products purchased in Europe were not in compliance with the relevant standards.

Prior to the latest report, TIC Council had previously carried out a set of studies between 2012 and 2017 on the same grounds. When making the two comparisons to see if any improvements had been made, the 2022 results surprisingly showed an increase of 15 percentage points in the total number of non-conformities.  Additionally, the percentage of dangerous nonconformities has also increased from 17% to 23%.

Join TIC Council and DG JUST for World Consumer Rights Day as we discuss the outcomes of the study and the various measures that need to be put in place to increase the degree of safety that consumers can expect from the EU Single Market. We invite you to read the main outcome of the report in the Executive Summary and do join the conversation on Wednesday 15 March.
